IP30 vs IP40 vs IP67 Industrial Switch Guide | Outdoor PoE Selection FAQ | Hinet

Publication date:2026-10-31 Category:FAQ & Knowledge Base
Abstract:
Key facts: Under IEC 60529, the first IP digit is the solid-particle level and the second is the water level. IP30 and IP40 have a second digit of 0 — no water protection at all. IP67 is dust-tight with short-term immersion up to 1m/30min, and is the only acceptable level for direct rain exposure (outdoor, trackside, mining). An IP rating is a system property: housing + connectors + cables + sealing rings + assembly. Hinet's full M12 accessory line is rated IP67, and EN50155 certification does not require IP67.

Ingress Protection Basics

Q1: What do IP30, IP40 and IP67 mean for an industrial Ethernet switch?

Short answer: The first digit is the solid particle ingress level, the second the water level. IP40 blocks objects ≥1mm with zero water protection; IP67 is dust-tight with 1m/30min immersion; IP30 blocks objects ≥2.5mm with zero water protection.

CodeSolidsWaterMeaning
IP3030Blocks ≥2.5mm objects; no water protection
IP4040Blocks ≥1.0mm objects; no water protection
IP6767Dust tight; short immersion ≤1m / 30min
  • The "4" in IP40 is not a water rating — the water digit is 0.
  • IP67's "7" means short-term immersion, not continuous underwater operation.
  • IP30 and IP40 both have zero water protection; both require a protective enclosure when water is present.

Hinet verified models by level: IP30 — IDS3008F4-8P (Layer 3, 240W budget); IP40 — IS1008-8P-M12, IS1608-8P-M12, IS1808F2-8P-M12, TNS1008-8P, IDS1808F2-8P, IDS1616F2-16P, IPE90-bt; IP67 — the IWS1005/1008/1605/1608/1808/3008-8P-M12 series.

Procurement one-liner: if rain can reach the device, only IP67 qualifies. IP30 and IP40 are identical in water protection — none.

Q2: Does an EN50155 industrial Ethernet switch have to be IP67?

Short answer: No. EN50155 and IP ingress protection are independent requirements.

The Hinet EN50155 industrial switch range contains both IP40 and IP67 models. Choose by installation: IP40 inside sealed vehicles or cabinets; IP67 for trackside, tunnel entrances, exposed poles and mining. Request the IEC 60529 test report — a metal housing description alone proves nothing.

Q3: Can an IP40 industrial switch be installed outdoors with a rain cover?

Short answer: IP40 provides no water protection. A rain cover only works if the whole enclosure system is sealed and rated.

  • Acceptable: sealed IP65/IP66 enclosure + cable glands on every entry + port caps + anti-condensation measures.
  • Not acceptable: simple hoods (driven rain enters sideways); unsealed cable entries; unused open ports.
  • Sealed enclosures trap heat — internal temperature can exceed the -40~+75°C rating and force PoE derating.
InstallationMinimum level
Indoor control cabinetIP30 / IP40 fine
Sealed outdoor enclosureIP30 / IP40 acceptable with glands and caps
Simple rain shelter / open bracketIP67 required
Trackside / pole / tunnel mouthIP67 required
Mine / heavy dust + waterIP67 required
Underwater long-termNone — IP67 is short immersion only

Q4: Is an IP67 switch always better than an IP40 model?

Short answer: Not always — but where rain reaches the device, IP40 has no substitute.

IP67 costs more, validates longer, and sealed housings worsen heat dissipation — high-temperature PoE derating becomes the likely bottleneck (no derating curves are published). For indoor cabinets, IP40 is sufficient and economical. Within the same Hinet series, the IP67 and IP40 counterparts keep the same M12 coding and speed class: IWS1008-8P-M12 and IS1008-8P-M12 are both 8 x 100M M12 D-code 30W; IWS1608-8P-M12 and IS1608-8P-M12 are both Gigabit M12 X-code.

Q5: How do I calculate PoE power for outdoor cameras and does IP rating affect it?

Short answer: Required PoE = sum of device power + 20-25% headroom. IP rating interacts with thermal derating: sealed enclosures run hotter and PoE output can fall below nameplate.

Example: 8 cameras x 15W = 120W → 150W with margin. IDS3008F4-8P publishes 240W total budget (30W/port, ports 1-8, 255W max including PoE, 44-57VDC) — ample for the load, but it is IP30 and needs a sealed outdoor enclosure or an IP67 alternative. IWS1808-8P-M12 and IWS1608-8P-M12 are IP67 with 30W per port but do not publish whole-unit budgets.

Q6: What surge protection do outdoor industrial PoE switches need?

Short answer: "Surge protection" without a kV figure is not a specification. Request the quantified level and design the full protection chain.

Hinet pages state power/data port surge protection with EMS items EN61000-4-2/-4-3/-4-4/-4-5/-4-6 but no kV value. Quantified data exists: IPE90-bt = 10/700µs 6kV (IEC 61000-4-5); rail-mounted protectors IPV101-6KV, IPV201-6KV, IPV101-10KV, IPV201-10KV. IP rating and surge protection address different hazards — outdoor projects need both, plus bonding and grounding design.

Q7: Can I use standard M12 cables with an IP67 switch and keep the rating?

Short answer: No. IP rating is a system property — housing, connectors, cables, sealing rings and assembly must all qualify.

The full Hinet M12 accessory line is rated IP67 (M12-P-5-A-IP67-1, M12-R-8-X-IP67-1, M12-M-8-X-IP67-1, M12-R-4-D-IP67-1, DH24-F-LC-IP67-1 and more). Coding must match: D-code for 100M models (IS1008-8P-M12, TNS1008-8P), X-code for Gigabit (IS1608-8P-M12, IWS1608-8P-M12). Unused ports must use metal caps (M12-CAP-F-M / M12-CAP-M-M) for IP67 sealing — plastic caps (M12-CAP-*-P) only block dust. DIY connectors: metal variants (M12-CON-4-D-IP67-M etc.) are required for IP67.

Q8: What evidence should I request to verify the IP rating?

Short answer: Six items, with the IEC 60529 test report at the core.

  1. IEC 60529 IP test report (method, sample condition, result, laboratory).
  2. Unused-port closure documentation and assembly process (the most common field failure cause).
  3. Sealing ring list and replacement interval.
  4. Operating temperature and PoE derating curve (power vs temperature).
  5. Quantified surge level (kV, waveform) for the switch ports.
  6. Environmental reports required by the project (thermal cycling, damp heat, condensation, salt spray).
